the first doll i ever made is dead somewhere.
i dumped her and never looked back because she was a hideous thing. huge and lumpy with a deformed looking head.

this is the second doll i made and she has been and continues to be well loved by myself and my daughter.
em added the hearts on the hands. her purple
braids have turned green and tattered at the tips and still she enchants me.

she lays on the studio floor along with all the other toys i have been playing with today. i’m too tired and cranky to go pick up after myself.  like some overtired toddler whose parent will have to go pick up after them.

i’ll have to parent myself in the morning.

waiting
my stomach in a knot.

i’m trying to sew but this fabric is like sewing a sheet of feathers in a windstorm. tendrils of it everywhere. i’m wearing black so i look like i’ve been tarred and feathered.

it’s too quiet. that sickening kind of quiet just before the screaming starts.

the machine is back, clean and oiled and humming along. the studio is a shambles, lu is napping on the lounge.
all is well.

my daughter’s lovely hands.
she’s got long skinny fingers like mine but the skin is sand papery rough and sprinkled with freckles.
this is from a series of hand mudras we did years ago when her grandmother was working on some project. i am looking for information on this particular mudra but can find nothing on it. maybe it’s one she made up.
maybe it means fearlessness
or
embodiment of the hobo

i took my sewing machine in for a tune up. finally!
it was past due but just like getting my scissors sharpened or going to the doctor or the dmv or the grocery store, there’s always something more pressing to do and there is always a sewing project in process.
i look forward to having my little machine back and running smoothly by thursday.
or else.
in the meantime
there are other toys to play with.
we found this bird in an abandoned house years ago. one of his wings is broken but still poised for flight.

hands
i spent yesterday and this morning putting my junk treasures in order.
there is now a paper box stuffed with snakes and a pewter bowl filled with skulls, bones tucked away in a wooden purse and a plaster dental cast holds my daughter’s tiny baby teeth as well as her four wisdom molars.
if i didn’t have to work today i’d be there still. finding the perfect place for the doll heads, listening to our neighbor the pakistani street dentist running his drill. lu would still be laying in her little patch of sunlight until she was half way melted.
