i’ve been hiding this week. i did go to work once and lunch with the songbird. i put on some pants and mascara (!) and had the English Cotswald and onion sandwich.
mostly what i did this week was stitch, incessantly. an idea niggled it’s way into my brain and wouldn’t let go until i finished and thank you lord shiva, i finished today. there is ironing and more stitching to do on the machine but i’m done for now. i’ve watched all the New Amsterdam episodes on Hulu mostly because i wanted to see the one our friend wrote and also because i can’t read subtitles while i’m stitching.

my mother called me yesterday and said she wasn’t feeling well and when i asked what was wrong exactly she said she felt like…
something was loose inside of her.
sometimes i don’t know what she’s talking about but today i know just what she meant.

the rain we had been promised for a week finally arrived last night washing away all the yellow pine pollen that was covering town and beating down the tulips that were blooming in the front yard. i cut them and brought them inside this morning and now instead of hanging their closed little heads they’re wide open. that’s what they do right before they die so i’m not sure bringing them in was such a good idea but they are still stunning.

meanwhile lu is still in her new box bed and refuses to get out this morning. she’s spent more time in that bed since we brought it home on saturday than she has out and now that it’s raining there is little chance of coaxing her out unless i get a crane to lift and deposit her outside or i’ll just wait for the dishwasher to come lift her. she looks small but she weighs 5 tons easy especially when she doesn’t want to move. that’s her super power. she can make herself extremely heavy.

quilt


i made this quilt almost 20 years ago, when i first moved to this town.
 
i don’t recall what initially moved me to make it only that i began experimenting with different dyeing techniques, using cold water dyes on unbleached cotton i tie dyed, moved on to shibori and then over dyeing and then stenciling and discharging. after i had a pretty good collection of luscious colors, i began tearing them into strips of various widths and lengths,sewing those together cutting them again at random then laying them out on the floor in my bedroom. i didn’t have any design or theme or pattern in mind i was just captivated by the color and feel of these fabrics and it became a puzzle to work through,one of my favorite pastimes.
i used freezer paper to make the stencils of the figures and bleach to discharge rather than add color to define them.
then the stitching began. i started with stitching an outline around the figures before i started the little circles.

 i don’t recall how long it took but looking at it now it seems it had to have taken a hundred years! all those tiny little stitches! again it wasn’t planned but done on the fly, starting anywhere, sticking my needle through and stitching outward in a spiral until i got tired of it moving onto another spot from which to begin another spiral until they all “met up” with each other. there are a couple of spots where i didn’t spiral probably when i thought i’d had enough but i didn’t do very much of that i always returned to the spiral.

i went on and did a series of quilts with these fabrics but this one remains my favorite and always hangs somewhere in the house.
