From Planting Along The Verge
on our way home yesterday i stopped in Harmony, population 18. it’s 8 miles down the road from us but i hadn’t stopped in years.  someone bought the town a few years back and almost all the shopkeepers left shortly after.  it wasn’t his plan for a slaughterhouse that drove everyone away but apparently he was difficult to get along with.  the pottery studio is still there and so is the glass studio but the post office open in 1910, closed down two years ago.  there is a chapel still in use.  a beautiful little spot.
i think this door way was the back of the Harmony Pasta Factory.
an appropriate image for me today.
i don’t know whether to knock softly or pound on it with closed fists.  do i even want to go through? is my reluctance cowardice, inertia or fear? all of the above?
something i heard on Alan Watt’s podcast the other day keeps ringing a bell.
“the mystery of life is not a problem to be solved but a reality to be experienced.”

we only went down to Santa Barbara walked a little and looked at the shadows.

stopped in at the Los Olivos market for a sandwich and drove back.
if there weren’t a devilishly dashing dishwasher waiting for his dinner i may not have come back at all.

thank you all for your kind sentiments.
i’m going to take it with me when i go.

small stitching of em when she was 11 or so
yesterday was lunch with friend day.
our usual place is closed for a couple of weeks as are a couple of other places in town.  it’s that time of year.
the food was just as good but there was no talking story with the owner.  instead there was an old school mate of my daughter’s all grown up lunching with an older couple at the table next to ours.  poised and beautiful and talking about her first semester at school and how she’s enjoying her break spending time with her family.
it never ceases to amaze me how many blows my heart can take.

i love mondays.
the house is quiet with the low hum of the furnace and the quiet rumble of the fish tank and lu’s soft snoring. unlike her deep hard sleep snoring which can rattle the windows.
i tried pulling myself away from the internet and it’s web of lusciousness. i did go out to the studio and dishwasher, you left the heat on bikram style so i have another excuse to sit here.

In this way, in the full proof and texture of my self, I accede to a self-forgetfulness that borders on ecstasy, to savor the blissful calm of my watching consciousness.

now that Raja and Cassius are gone the wild creatures are trying to come in.
there were raccoon tracks on the back deck and i saw a cat strolling back there like he’s deciding whether to move in or not. he must be the one that dug up one of my potted plants.  lu will not be of any use as she doesn’t care about boundaries and property.  only butt petting.  she barks on rare occasions but mostly she’ll invite you in and bring you her toys one by one.  when she does go out she likes to get up on the lounge chair and take the sun. it worries me as our house backs up to wilderness for miles and miles and miles.  at night we hear coyotes and sometimes foxes and even the wily cow.  we also have mountain lions and zebras. yes, zebras thanks to mr randolph hearst who decided he wanted a zoo.
